Give the area a different background color or put a box around it. Make the purchase area stand out so that your readers know exactly what to do to get what you promised them.

Interactive agencies and the future challenges

Amy Auerbach wrote a day or two ago about how our industry might face a problem in lacking industry professionals for a fast pace of development in our industry. I have to say that I share her thoughts in expressing concern about this issue given the fact that our industry is reinventing itself often and that we work in a environment that is multidisciplined as it can get. Clearly we are developing things that have a marketing soul on one hand and a strong technology base on the other, not to mentions the ever expanding list of the strategies, tactics and tools that are being invented on a daily basis. Interactive agencies are getting in so many different fields of work (marketing, PR, CRM, process organization, and so on..) that it takes a very wide array of experts to cover them.

The problem is that what we need is not a ready made expert. We need people that are able to reinvent themselves often. That want to grow with the industry and be a creative part of it. And those are hard to find...

Will WWW beat the 30-second spot?

People who visited Advertising Week pointed out that one of the recurring topics was the future of the 30-second TV spot. Brian McAndrews, president and CEO of aQuantive stated: "Our belief is that the Web site is going to replace the 30-second commercial over time as the central expression of the brand."

Interesting thought. Although a little bit futuristic. My opinion is that this can certainly happen, but not so fast. On the other hand, branding is closely related to the web site even now. You have to bear in mind that there is a good chance that a customer will interact with your brand only on the web. Talking about the 20-30 age group this will most probably happen. Change in media consumption has done that, so the wisest thing would definitely be to follow it.

The other thing is related to the amount of information that you can get from a web site. While on the 30-second spot you are constrained by the time issue, a website can offer timeless experience and a very structured one. Everything from the logo to the most complex information is linked and easy to use (well, this is not the case for every website).

Monetizing Your Website or Blog

I have to admit that I resisted using Google's AdSense program for a long time. I really can't explain why - I just did.

Recently, however, I decided to experiment with it. What a pleasant surprise!

It took me a few hours to put the code on all the pages of several websites that I own, but since then, all I have to do is check my stats once in a while to see how I'm doing.

How am I doing? Without going into specific numbers, let's just say that I have a nice additional stream of monthly income from several websites that otherwise generated sales on an erratic basis.

Now those sites kick off enough monthly income to cover a significant percentage of my own PPC ads. The click-throughs and income vary quite a bit from day to day, but I'm still quite happy with the results.

Favorite Internet Marketing Forum

I saw something the other day on the Warriors Forum that inspired me. Before I go into it, I should mention that the Warriors Forum is one of those hidden gems that I had heard about for a long time, but only recently joined.

If you've never heard of it, or have just been putting it off, you ought to think about joining the Warriors. What a great program, and a great group of people!

When you join, you gain access to all kinds of articles, ebooks, and other resources that will give you an education. You also get resale rights to a number of ebooks, and, of course, access to the forum.

The whole thing is the brainchild of Allen Says, who is well-known in internet marketing circles. The forum is a tremendous resource, and quite a few people whose names I have seen mentioned often are regular posters.

You'll meet people with all levels of skill and experience, get questions answered, get feedback on your ideas or your advertising copy, and can even look for Joint Venture partners.

Can you tell that I love the place? Forums are a great way to educate yourself, meet some of your internet marketing colleagues, and let yourself be known.

Anyway -- now for the great suggestions I saw posted.

The basic idea was to do TWO things every day that will in some way increase your earnings and productivity, and benefit your business. What a great idea!

1. Do something every day that will make you more money, or increase traffic and sales.

• do some link exchanges with relevant sites
• place an ezine ad or write and distribute an article
• look for profitable PPC words, and place some new ads
• increase your budget for successful PPC ad campaigns
• add a stream of revenue (i.e., affiliate product) to a content site
• review the last thing you read, and implement one suggested strategy

2. Do something every day that will reduce your expenses or make you more efficient

• automate some task or aspect of your business
• add to your FAQ, to cut down on email inquiries
• shut off your email client and chat software for the day
• unsubscribe from a newsletter you no longer find helpful
• abstain from surfing any websites for the day
• cancel recurring payments for memberships or services you don't use
• make a text file with your link text pre-formatted, so you can do "cut and paste" link exchanges
• add pages to your content site

The other thing the guy suggested was to do something nice every day. Be good to someone, help someone, whatever, but do it just for the sake of doing it.

The reward for you, of course, is that you'll like yourself better, which will actually make you more productive and successful over time.

I've paraphrased, but some of the above was in the original forum post, and some I came up with on my own, because that forum post got me to thinking.

In the past year, I've become a big fan of forums and blogs, because of their "information value". Seems like every time I visit one, I either learn something directly, or am prompted to think about something in a new way, and I end up learning from the forum indirectly.

My favorite forum to date, by far, is the Warriors Forum.

Exciting New Internet Business Compensation Plan

I've been a member of SFI for about a year and a half now. I've been earning some OK commissions from it, but nothing to write home about, so far.

A month or so ago, they unveiled a substantial revision to their compensation plan, and that revision just went into effect on January 1, 2005.

WOW! Am I excited? Can you say wowee, zowee???

They came up with this thing called a "T-Net". It's a TEAM building concept that I have not seen yet in any other online business that has a compensation plan similar to traditional MLM.

By the way, in "SFI-speak", TEAM means "together everybody achieves more". I love it!

Anyway, back to the "t-net". When you join as a free affiliate, they give you a place in the "t-net" that they claim will *guarantee* you a commission check, even in your very first full month.

The fact that SFI gives them a chance to earn a commission check in their very first month of membership creates a powerful incentive for those new free affiliates to upgrade their membership to the next level and become an "Executive Affiliate". That, in turn, doubles their sales commissions and opens up multiple other revenue opportunities.

Under the new plan, you get paid in part based upon the performance of people above AND below you in the network, in addition to the commissions you earn on your own through sales from your "V-Store". (I get most of my "v-store" sales using PPC advertising.)

Your "downline" is composed not only of your own recruits, but also of recruits brought in by your upline(s). That in itself is nothing new. I get the same benefit from my favorite online network marketing programs.

The difference is the rapidity with which the SFI T-Net grows your downline, and expands your commissions. I got six new affiliates today alone, and NONE of them came from my own recruiting efforts! If even one of them turns out to be a good salesperson or recruiter, it will be great for me, too.

Increase Your Visibility With Non-Reciprocated Links

You've probably heard recently, as I have, that some search engines give greater weight to "one-way" links to your site than they do to reciprocal links.

Personally, I don't know whether this is true or not, but it seems reasonable, since links are viewed as "endorsements", and a one-way link seems more like a true endorsement than a two-way link which suggests a mutual admiration society.

Some people who own more than one website have taken to doing "three-way" link exchanges, in which they will link to from Site A to your site, and ask you to reciprocate by linking to Site B, which they also own. I've done this myself more than a few times, especially when I'm trying to build the page rank of a new site.

The other technique that I've recently stumbled upon is even simpler. Go to the search engine of your choice and type in one of your preferred key words or key phrases. Then just start clicking through to the top ten or twenty sites in the results. Look for their "add your link" (or similar) page.

A surprising number of sites will let you add your link to their directory without requesting a reciprocal link from you. For some search terms, I've found that one out of five or so of the top-ranked sites will do this.

Why would they be willing to give you a one-way link? By doing so, they establish their credibility with the search engines as "authority sites". Such sites tend to have either a large number of outgoing links and less incoming, or the other way around.

The imbalance tips the search engine bot to the fact the site is an "authority" on some subject. Either the site is one that redirects people to other high quality sites on that subject, or it is one that is highly regarded by other sites within its niche. Either way, it's an "authority".

Regardless of the theory behind it, taking a little time to go through the process of finding these sites that will give you one-way links can give a big boost to your site. You're getting an incoming link from a site which most likely has high Page Rank, and a link from a well-established site with high search engine results page listings.

In my own experience, the latter, in particular, seems to be especially potent. Emarketingman.Com
has quite a few highly ranked pages. When I've linked from those pages to my newer pages, or to new sites I've developed, I'm amazed at how quickly and how well-placed the new pages show up in the search listings.

One-way links work, and they aren't that hard to find. Try it yourself!

Hidden Sources of Online Profit

In going over things during tax season and assessing my online businesses, two things jumped out at me. I thought maybe others would be interested, too. We all want to make more profit, don't we?

The first thing I noticed was that I had allowed my costs to go up higher than I would have liked. Is there a simpler way to increase profits than cutting costs? Not in my book, at least.

I set about trimming the fat. Right away, I found several programs to which I was still paying membership fees, even though I was no longer visiting the sites. Resigning from a few of those lopped a small, but still significant chunk off my monthly expense.

Then I really hit paydirt. I analyzed the income from a more expensive program, which also had a significant advertising cost, and decided it just wasn't paying, and the monthly increases in the commissions simply weren't enough to justify the cost. I resigned from that one, too.

The result? Nearly $3000 per year in expense reduction. This year, that will be an addition to my bottom line. Granted, it's not huge, but who couldn't use an extra two or three thousand a year? Most of us are struggling or just sputtering along, and aren't in the "six figures club", so that extra couple thousand means something.

Next, I focused on my Pay Per Click Advertising. I recently purchased two ebooks that have greatly helped me to fine-tune my PPC costs and revenue.

Perry Marshall's Definitive Guide to Google Adwords gave me some great insights and tips that I would never have figured out on my own. Implementing some of the strategies he recommends has cut my PPC ad cost by at least a third, maybe even in half. As best I can tell, my sales have nonetheless stayed about the same.

Google AdSense Secrets opened up a whole new world to me, and I began using AdSense on a number of my sites immediately. The results so far have been pleasantly surprising. The revenues I'm generating cover a significant percentage of my own PPC advertising cost.

Between reducing my PPC ad cost and finding a source of revenue nearly equal to my advertising cost, I have effectively drastically reduced my expense. This was one of my biggest expense categories last year, but this year my goal is to come as close as I can to having it be zero. Doing so will add several thousand more dollars to my bottom line.

Finally, I turned my attention to increasing the exposure for my most lucrative affiliate programs.

Going over my records indicated that I was getting a healthy chunk of revenue from affiliate commissions on MLM leads, and that this was my biggest single source of revenue for last year. I also noticed that I get quite a bit of income (and residual income, at that) from affiliate sales of web site hosting accounts.

I decided first to develop some additional doorway pages optimized for additional key words related to these affiliate programs. Then I went to the various traffic and start page exchanges that I use, and made sure I had several links going to all of the doorway pages related to promoting these programs.

The final step in my "spring cleaning" will be to see what I can do to improve the results from the affiliate programs that I promote with the least success. It may be that some of them are not worth promoting, while others simply need a few more doorway pages, or better fine-tuning of the existing sales and doorway pages to more accurately target my chosen key words and phrases for those products.

The moral of the story? A few hours work and some critical thinking allowed me to add several hundred dollars a month (more than that, actually) to my bottom line, simply by cutting the fat out of my expenses.

I suggest that you take a serious look at your own expenses. Good luck finding some "hidden sources of profit" in your business!

Internet Business Made Easy

Everybody wants to know how they can make money on the internet. After all, if they didn't, this blog, and the associated web site, wouldn't exist.

Most people who get interested in internet marketing inevitably decide that the best thing they can do is to offer a "how to make money" product.

Cummon ... unless you've been at it several years, at least, or have stumbled onto some totally unique method, it's just a case of the blind leading the blind. Ironically, that is why internet marketing info products have a bad name - many of them were written by people who really haven't a clue what they're doing.

Suppose there WERE a fairly easy way to make a nice income from the internet. Would you be interested?

Here it is, in a nutshell.

1. Start with a topic area that genuinely interests you. It doesn't matter if it's your hobby, your vocation, or just something of interest to you. If you can't stay interested over the long haul, your business will inevitably fail.

2. Do some research ahead of time, and find some key words or phrases related to that topic which have reasonable search volume, but not a lot of competing websites and products. You can do it manually, using the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool and manual searches on your favorite major search engine to gather your data. If you can afford it, Wordtracker is an automated tool that many top marketing experts use for key word research.

3. Develop an information website and blog in your chosen topic area, and structure it to revolve around the key words and phrases that you chose in step 2. Use quality Search Engine Optimization software on the website, in particular, but also optimize your blog posts, to make your pages ideal "spider bait".

4. Incorporate pay-per-click ads on your website. I use Google AdSense and/or Affiliate Power Ads, but there are several others you can try, too. If you're subtle about it, you can also weave some affiliate links into the text of your pages and blog posts, but use a low-key "soft sell" approach.

5. Get some link exchanges with related and complementary sites. Finding complementary links is best. Those are from sites whose content is related to yours, but the site is not in direct competition with your site.

6. The final step is to be patient for several months, and continue to add relevant links and quality content to your site and blog. The old adage that "Rome wasn't built in a day" applies to any business, online or off.

Will you make a zillion bucks a month with this method? Nope, but you can make some nice, steady cash. How much depends a lot on the popularity of the topic area you've chosen, how well you write your website and blog, and how much the PPC advertisers are paying for clicks in those areas.

If you really want to be one of the "big earners" that you see bragging about how much they make, then you need ultimately to develop your own product or products that are in some way unique, revolutionary, or better than the competition.

In the meantime, the method described above makes some nice extra cash for people who pursue it, and in some cases evolves into a full time income.
